Refreshment for the Fall The Ancient Made New #2 When God Says, “I Am.” When you meet someone for the first time, how long does it take you to decide whether or not you want to get to know them better? How do you decide? Read the following sections of scripture. Write brief descriptions of God based on what you see. Exodus 3:1-6 God _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Verses 7-12 God___________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Verses 13-15 God__________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ This next part may surprise you. Verses 16-22 God_______________________ In Romans 9, Paul, as he discusses the sovereignty of God, quotes passages from the Old Testament about thirteen times. Some of the quotes are… Genesis 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. Genesis 25:23 The Lord said to Rebekah, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” Malachi 1:2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’ “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob, 3 but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.” Exodus 33:19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Exodus 9:16 But I have raised you up[a] for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. Isaiah 29:16 You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? Isaiah 45:9 “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’? Hosea 2:23 “I will plant her for myself in the land; I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.’ I will say to those called ‘Not my people,’ ‘You are my people’; and they will say, ‘You are my God.’” declares the Lord. Isaiah 8:”He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. Isaiah 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic. Why include these quotes in this lesson?_________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Isaiah 55 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
